Because of the size of the facility, the 2010 KMOM project will be smaller than in previous years. As a result, we will need fewer volunteers in most areas and there will likely be less “working space.”

The event, the ninth KMOM project, will take place in Independence on April 16-17 at the Independence Community College Fieldhouse.

“We look forward to working with the community of Independence over the next seven months to bring the 2010 KMOM event to the Independence area,” said Greg Hill, Executive Director of the Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation, the organizing committee for the KMOM project. “We will be making contacts within the next few months as we look for community support both for volunteers, but for monetary and in-kind support to our efforts.”

The upcoming project aims to treat about 1500 patients, a smaller amount than the clinic typically treats.

“As a result of this decrease in size, the number of patients and providers will be slightly less than in previous years,” Hill said. “We’ll have a better idea of the number of volunteers needed for this project later, but we felt we needed to notify those volunteers in advance.”

The Kansas Mission of Mercy project has treated 16,000 patients since its inception in 2003. It has treated approximately 2000 patients and provided $1 million in free dental care at each KMOM project.

In just a few days, the 2009 KMOM Manhattan dental project will be under way. We can't thank you enough for your help in making this event a success. If not for your efforts, the opportunity for us to provide dental care would not be possible.

There will likely be more information over the next few days we would like to share with you. We will be putting that information out in a number of ways. First, more than fifty of you have signed up for our mobile phone text messaging. This allows us to quickly and easily send important announcements during the clinic to you directly. If you have not yet done so, please take a minute and sign up. We are also on Facebook. If you are a Facebook user, connect with us and follow our updates through the weekend.

We will also be updating information to the website as we go along, including video updates on KMOM TV. We want your video as well. Grab your camera or your phone, record some video and either upload it and send us the link or send us an email and we'll upload them. Record what you see or your own thoughts and comments about what you see. If you upload photos, send us
the link and we'll be happy to share those too. If possible, tag photos, videos and other content as "KMOM09" to help us.

Of course, we'll be uploading photos, stories and other announcements to the KDCF website and blog. Check in, follow our progress and share your thoughts and stories. We are trying to not only keep you informed, but to create an opportunity to interact and share the mission with others.

We'll also have the KMOM Posters available for sale to help us raise money so we can continue to provide our free dental care
service. Children at the Garden City KMOM Clinic left behind dozens of drawings and art work, thanking the volunteers for the dental care they and their family received. We saved that artwork, selected some of the best, and created a beautiful 18x24 inch poster celebrating the passion and care given by so many people. The Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation is selling these posters for $20 each and the proceeds will support our mission to support dental health here in Kansas.

It is truly remarkable to see the response to the call for volunteers for the upcoming Kansas Mission of Mercy (KMOM) project. To date, the Kansas Mission of Mercy has brought together over 4,000 volunteers committed to the projects.

The clinic in the National Guard Armory (721 Levee Dr) will house 72 operatories where approximately 2,000 patients will receive nearly $1,000,000 in free dental care – what an opportunity to make a difference. We want to thank you for making the commitment to this most worthy outreach program. We believe this endeavor will be an enriching experience to all involved – volunteers, sponsors and, of course, the many less fortunate that we each have chosen to serve. The gift is truly in giving.

We have put together as much information as we have available to help you prepare for the weekend. We recognize that each of your expectations and needs for pre-event planning may be different. One of the challenges we face every KMOM Project is how to communicate important information instantly to the roughly one thousand volunteers, nearly two patients that we treat and to the unidentified number that we are unable to treat. We have in the past relied nearly exclusively on the traditional media sources. This year, we have added a new tool that will allow us to provide you with instant information (even delivered to your cell phone through instant messaging) as it happens at KMOM. We can now deliver important announcements, clinic status and other volunteer needs right to your mobile phone. Just as important, you can deliver information back to us from your mobile phone to let us know what is going on.

Age Requirements to Volunteer for KMOM

The Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation requires that all volunteers at the KMOM Clinic be at least 18 years of age unless accompanied by a parent or a guardian. Sixteen and Seventeen year olds may volunteer, but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and no volunteers will be permitted under the age of 16. Additionally, no volunteer under the age of 18 will be permitted to work on the clinic floor.

To provide dental care to underserved, the KMOM project will treat patients on a first come-first served basis and will treat approximately 2000 patients with value of more than $1 million. Patients will be given a medical screening and then triaged into either restorative (fillings), extractions, pediatric (children), oral surgery for major problems, or dental hygiene. Despite the recognition that all citizens need access to oral health care services, many still lack adequate, if any, access to such health services. KMOM has attempted to reach out to this high-risk, underserved populations to provide much-needed dental care with seven projects held around the state of Kansas since 2003.

Joe the Plumber

Watching the news this morning, it was clear that the biggest topic in last night's debate was a man referred to simply as "Joe the Plumber." Joe the Plumber is a man from Ohio who was mentioned roughly twenty times during the third Presidential debate.

Those who have been involved in the KMOM organization know "Joe the Plumber" as one of those volunteers who goes above and beyond to help make KMOM a success. Our "Joe the Plumber" is Joe Martin from Soloman who too is a plumber. While a real person, the Ohio Joe the Plumber represents an ordinary American who faces the same real struggles that middle-class America faces.

To us, "Joe The Plumber" of Soloman represents the spirit of giving that is exemplified through so many KMOM volunteers. Yes, there are dentists who come to every event that we hold. But too, there are general volunteers who show up every time and do far more than we could ever give them thanks for. So to Joe the Plumber (Joe Martin) thank you to all that you have done to make KMOM a success. And to all the other "Joe the Plumbers" out there, we couldn't do it without you.

Hotels and Registration

We have received a few phone calls regarding the hotel registration for KMOM Manhattan. There are several hotels in Manhattan where we have blocks of rooms for the event and those blocks are being held through January 30. We have not publically announced the hotel information at this time. As most of you know, we do schedule evening activities which may ultimately influence where you want to stay. Those evening activities have not been finalized at this time. In addition, we are still several weeks away from launching our registration for KMOM Manhattan. We prefer to announce all plans at once, rather than announce the hotels now which will then prompt additional inquiries into the KMOM registration.

Rest assurred that there are plenty of room available and we well leave plenty of time to register.

The Power of Stories

I admit I have always gotten a little nervous speaking in front of groups, no matter how small they might be. I remember in fifth grade giving a presentation and having to stand behind the desk so the class couldn’t see my legs shake. Not that the fluttering in my voice didn’t give it away.

Fortunately, the nervousness I now get is nowhere near that extreme, but I do still get nervous. I think it is only natural though and once I get into my presentation, it usually wears off quickly and I begin to feel at ease with the group I am speaking to.

Recently, I had an opportunity to talk about KMOM with a Kiwanis Group in Kansas City at the invitation of Dr. Karen Baker. Now I have had the chance to talk about KMOM a number of times over the past few years and there are really two approaches. The first is to explain what the project is, what we do and the logistics behind it - the setup, teardown, funding, collaboration, etc. It’s the stuff that makes it happen. And for spreading the message with other states that might want to do a similar project, it’s a very good nuts and bolts way to explain what KMOM does. But it’s a presentation I hate to give. It’s not me. It’s not what inspires me.

So I threw that presentation away and before speaking to a Rotary Club in Independence earlier this year, I rewrote it, focusing not on the “what we do”, but on the “why we do it.” That approach focuses squarely on the patients and was the reason behind the KMOM Topeka video. It’s the stories of the decisions that patients all across Kansas have to make. Do they buy that winter coat for their children or do they take care of the cavity in their own mouth? Do they buy $4 a gallon gasoline so they can drive to the night shift that allows a father to put a roof over his children’s head and food on the table or does he see a dentist because of an infection that has erupted? What we have found is that a great many of the patients we treat are the working class of our society and have no other options as prices on necessities continue to skyrocket. They take care of their family’s needs, often at their own expense.

Then I told the stories of a few people I have met along the way. There was the 102 year old volunteer from Garden City KMOM in 2003 who was waiting on his 80 year old daughter to pick him up after he worked the morning shift. There was a young boy in Kansas City who volunteered to read to a group of kids for a photo, but continued to read as a crowd of young children gathered around him on that hot 107 degree day in Kansas City. And then there is the mother of two twelve- year old daughters who I had the opportunity to see smile for the very first time after a set of dentures was placed into her mouth. Her two daughters stood beside her with tears of joy as a ray of sunshine created a glow around their mother’s head. It is a moment forever engrained in my mind and one that chokes me up every time I talk about it. And it did on that morning, in front of twenty strangers. But it was okay. As I looked around, there was not a dry eye to be seen. They understood the message and the purpose for why we do what we do. It’s about public service. It’s about a profession stepping up where a system has let us down. It’s something far greater than portable dental chairs, units and lights. It’s the human spirit, making a difference in people’s lives.

That is the presentation I like to give. As I walked out of that room that day, I thought not about how I did, but about the people we have touched along the way.

PRE-MEDICATION PROTOCOL
Amoxicillin or Clindamycin will be dispensed as needed.
Pre-medicate for the following conditions:
 Any Joint Replacement within 3 years
 Organ transplant
 Immunocompromised Patients
 HIV+/AIDS
 Systemic Lupus
 Rheumatoid Arthritis
 Insulin-Dependent (Type 1) Diabetes
 Artificial heart valves
 History of infective endocarditis
 Certain specific heart birth defects
MEDICAL CONDITIONS LIMITING TREATMENT
Patients on ASA or Plavix can be treated for Extractions.
Patients that have held Coumadin for three days prior to treatment may receive extractions or other surgical procedures.
Bisphosphonates (Aredia & Zometa):
Routine dental care may be provided.
Local anesthetic can be used as necessary.
Scaling and Prophylaxis as atraumatically as possible with gentle soft tissue management.
Avoid dental extractions if possible unless Class 3 mobility.

MOM's Making a Difference

In addition, 67,000 patients have received treatment services donated by dental volunteers in eight states, including the New Orleans Mission of Mercy project. The Measure of a Year

I have to admit, I have always gotten excited about the New Year. For me, the new year represents a new beginning and with that, new opportunities to better myself and the things to which I have dedicated myself.

We all enter the new year with resolutions of those things we want to accomplish. It’s like a farmer sowing his seeds with the anticipation of what the growing season might bring. It’s easy to sow the seeds, but more difficult to cultivate those seeds through their harvest at the end of the year.

When you start to think about it, a year really is a long time. They tend to stream by, sometimes much faster than we would like. The song Seasons of Love from the musical Rent begins with the following verse which made me think about the year ahead:

How Do You Measure - Measure A Year?

In Midnights - In Cups Of Coffee

In Inches - In Miles

In Laughter - In Strife

Exactly, how do we measure a year? Is it four seasons? Twelve months? Three hundred sixty five days? Or as the song says, five hundred twenty-five thousand, six hundred minutes? Or do you measure it somehow different? Is this the year you plan to retire? To get married? To have a child? Or simply to laugh more?

The end of the year and the beginning of another offers a logical opportunity to look back on the successes and failures of the past year and to contemplate those “resolutions” for the upcoming year. It’s easy to write some simple goals on a sheet of paper, yet it is hard to make meaningful changes. It’s even more difficult to publish your New Year’s resolutions for the world to see. But here they are my resolutions for 2008.

1) Read. I’m not talking the sports pages here. I’m talking about the classics, history, words that define the richness of our society.

2) Listen. There is much to learn by listening to others, even if you disagree.

3) Write. I have found few things I enjoy more than sitting down at the computer and writing. My mind is full of ideas. This is the year to put them on paper … or into the computer.

4) Help. Our community has needs and many of those needs can be addressed by volunteering.

5) Finish. It’s difficult sometimes to follow through on something to the very end. My resolution this year is to leave no task incomplete.

6) Develop. Like writing, my mind is full of ideas. Like a chess game, I have spent this past year moving pieces into place for what I hope are some fun and exciting projects ahead.

These may not seem like monumental goals, but by achieving these six things, I feel like I will be a more complete person living life to its fullest. For me, the daylights, the sunsets, the midnights and the cups of coffee are pleasures of life, not measures of life. The miles run and the laughs and smiles are things I am thankful for and fortunate to have.

The opportunity to serve as the Executive Director of the Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation is a great honor and one I don’t take lightly. My goal each day that I come to work is to end the day knowing that I have done something to better the foundation and to further its mission.

I welcome 2008 with its challenges and its rewards. I can’t see the future. However, if I can read, listen, write, help, finish, and develop for the next five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes, I will have a wonderful story to tell on the eve of 2009.

KMOM, Kansas Mission of Mercy and the Kansas Mission of Mercy logo are all trademarks of the Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation. Any usage of these names in any publication must include the language, “Kansas Mission of Mercy (or KMOM) is a project of the Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation.” Other language may be used if approved by the Foundation.

Usage of the KMOM logo must be approved prior to use. Only the “official” KMOM logo may be used to represent the project.

The Kansas Mission of Mercy is a project of the Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation and with the support of many sponsors has treated more than ten-thousand patients and provided in excess of $4.5 million in free dental care. Volunteers and contributors to the projects make donations and sacrifices for the goodwill of the patients who lack access to dental care. As such, as a volunteer or a donor, there is an expectation that the KMOM project will not be used for commercial or economic gain. This includes, and is not limited to, requesting special recognition from the Foundation for your participation, using KMOM photos in any marketing or public relations publications, or displaying any type of marketing materials at the KMOM project.

Donations in excess of $10,000 for a KMOM project will be recognized on a banner placed in an area designed for volunteers and your logo will be placed on the KMOM website. The $10,000 level may also be achieved as an average during multiple KMOM projects. Please contact the Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation for more information.

The KMOM project is primarily organized by the Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation and all key decisions of the project must be made by the Foundation. This includes the application for any grants, purchasing of any dental equipment, location of possible mission sites, etc.

KDCF Honored for KMOM

The Kansas Dental Charitable Foundation was honored recently by the UMKC Dental Hygienists Alumni Association at the Mid-States Dental Conference held at the Crown Center Hyatt in Kansas City on March 16th.
The “Reaching Out for Excellence in Dental Health Award” was presented Dr. Kevin Cassidy, President of the Kansas Dental Association and member of the Board of Directors of the foundation who attended the luncheon. The KDCF was recognized for outstanding commitment and dedicated efforts for its Kansas Mission of Mercy dental clinic.
To date, the Kansas Mission of Mercy has treated more than 10,000 patients with dental services valued at $5.4 million.
